10. Zhujiayu Village (朱家裕)

Located in Zhangqiu City, southeast of Jinan, Zhujiayu Village is known as the “No.1 Village in Shandong Province.” First built at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the village was originally called Chengjiaoyu and then changed its name as its residents were all surnamed Zhu. 600 years onwards, the place still preserves over 200 ancient buildings, 20 stone bridges, various ancestral halls and temples. In 2005, Zhujiayu was named one of the most famous “Historical and Cultural Villages” across the country.

The Black Tiger Spring, situated on the southern bank along the city’s moat, is the second largest spring in Jinan based on water flow. The spring water rises from a cave and cascades from three stone animal heads, dropping from a height of 28 meters into a stone pool that is 13 meters long and nine meters wide. Winds emit a terrifying roar as they blow through the cave where the water flows out; therefore, the spring got its name of Heihu, or Black Tiger. The water of the spring is so pure that you can see many local residents carry it home to drink.

The Xiuyuan River Scenic Area lies in the southwestern part of Mingshui Town, Zhangqiu City. Located in the Lixia District of the urban center of Jinan, Qushuiting Street or literally “winding water pavilion street” is a significant historic alley in the city. With 520 meters in length and on average 2.86 meters in width, the street passes by the Fuxue Confucian Temple in the west and the Palace of Prince De in the east. The alley follows the course of the Winding Water Creek which connects the water from the Pearl Spring and the Palace Pool. Covering an area of 25 hectares, the park was built in 1986 and consists of Moquan Spring, East Mawan Lake, Lotus Spring, Shuyu Spring and Qingzhao Temple Poetry Garden. The well of the Moquan Spring lies deep within the earth, giving the surface water an ink-like shade. The water of the Lotus Spring jets from five underground outlets, making the ripples on the surface look like blooming lotuses. Qingzhao Temple is an ancient residence of Li Qingzhao, the most eminent female poet from the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Jiuru Mountain Scenic Area is located at Licheng District, about 48 kilometers southwest of downtown Jinan. With an area of 36 square kilometers, over 97 percent of the place is covered by different kinds of vegetation. Situated outside the west gate of the old Jinan downtown area, Wulong Pool, or Five Dragon Pool is fed by a group of artesian karst springs. With Baotu Spring in the south and Daming Lake in the north, the water quality of the pool is the best found across all the springs in the city. Five Dragon Pool Park, built in 1985, is mainly composed of a lake, a pool and 27 different springs. The architecture of the park adopted both the park-building essentials of North and South China. The place is said to have once been the residence of well-known Tang Dynasty General Qin Qiong (A.D.?-638).

Daming Lake, in the heart of the downtown area, is regarded as one of the must-see tourist spots in Jinan. Covering an area of 46 hectares, the lake is fed by many artesian karst springs and hence retains a constant water level throughout the year. The average depth of the lake is two meters, and its deepest point lies at about four meters. When summer arrives, lotuses bloom on the water and half of the Daming Lake Park is filled with their fragrant scent. Willows circle the lake on three sides and swing in the breeze. Standing at the top floor of Chaoran Pavilion, built on the lake itself, you can catch a bird’s-eye view of the entire area and the whole city.

Baotu Spring is no doubt the most renowned attraction in Jinan. It is an artesian karst spring fed by underground limestone water through three outlets. The volume of the water coming out of the spring can reach up to 240,000 cubic meters per day, and the water jetting out is said to reach as high as 26.49 meters (86.9 feet). The spring water, clear and transparent, is ideal drinking water; and the water temperature remains at a constant 18℃(64.4℉) all year round. Baotu was declared the “No.1 Spring under Heaven” by Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1644 -1911), and since has become the symbol of the city.
